Goal: Lose Weight

In my last entry, I gave you three essentials for a lifestyle makeover. These are very important, especially if your goal is to lose weight. If this is you goal, here is some additional advice.
One important item to losing weight is conscious eating. Most fad diets have two components:
1) You are more aware of the types of foods you are eating and, as a result,

2) You are able to eliminate one item (e.g. carbohydrates). Usually it is the elimination of this item that is the fad diet - e.g. a no carb diet. Normally, a person cannot completely eliminate that one thing from their diet and cheats, which tends to lead to the failure of the diet.
An average person tends to overlook what they eat during the day. This is the reason most nutritionists ask you to keep a food diary of everything you eat. I had to do this during med school, and I was extremely surprised at the end of the day to read the list of food I had eaten that day, as most people usually are.

We tend to forget what we eat during the day - especially that handful of pretzels or that bar of candy. Did you know that a handful of pretzels can add about 150-200 calories? This is a significant amount, especially when you have a 1,500 calorie diet.
And there's the dreaded e-word: Exercise. As you've probably heard before, it is best to go with a partner. Not only is it fun, but you can motivate each other. Choose your partner carefully. There are times when a person who is not as fit as his/her partner will try to keep up with the partner but can't.

After a short while, that person will feel discouraged and simply give up. Know your limitations. Try to choose a partner who is at the same physical level as you are. In that way, you can both grow your physical abilities together.
Has anyone tried these when they were trying to lose weight? I'd love to hear your feedback.
